Jared Leto knows how to enjoy an event without indulging in dinner. Comedian Mae Martin shared a memorable encounter with the Morbius actor during a podcast episode. According to Martin, Leto, who exuded a cult leader vibe with his shades and long hair, opted out of a sumptuous meal prepared by a Michelin star chef at an event they both attended. When the chef greeted the guests, Leto declined to partake in the meal, citing a past incident of food poisoning at similar events. Instead, he pulled out an energy bar from his jacket, declaring it his go-to snack. Leto, known for adhering to a vegan diet, opened up about being a “cheagan” in a 2016 Rolling Stone interview, indicating occasional deviations from veganism for specific circumstances. Representatives for Leto have not responded to requests for comments on this incident.

On a new episode of their podcast Handsome, comedian Mae Martin recalled witnessing the Morbius actor unusually circumvent a lavish meal. “I did go to an event where Jared Leto was at the same table as me and he was sitting across from me and he has the vibe of a sort of cult leader,” the comedian said. “And he was in his shades and his long hair. And it was like, there was this amazing chef, like a Michelin star chef. And the food was amazing.” During the meal, the lauded chef stepped out of the kitchen to greet the guests. “So the chef comes out at one point and is like, ‘I hope you’re enjoying the meal’ and Jared Leto goes ‘Uh, I’m not going to eat it,’ and we’re all like ‘Oh, okay, yeah.’” Leto explained his rationale: “he goes, ‘Yeah, cuz I got food poisoning at one of these things once,’” Martin recalled, “and the chef is like, ‘Oh sir, I assure you you would not get food poisoning from my food.’” That’s when the Suicide Squad actor produced his tasty snack. “And [Leto] reaches in his jacket and he pulls out a power bar, like an energy bar, and he’s like ‘That’s why I always bring these,’” Martin said. “And he opens it and starts eating it in front of the chef.”

In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, the Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman said that he typically adheres to a vegan diet. “I’m a cheagan,” he told the outlet. “A cheating vegan. I don’t eat meat ever. But if someone’s mom made a cookie and handed it to me, I’d probably take a bite, or if I’m in Alaska and there’s wild salmon out of the river, I’d probably eat it.”
